“And you will know... Helghan belongs to the Helghast...”

Leading the charge for Sony’s 2009 onslaught on the gaming industry is the mighty Killzone 2 (soon to be followed by the likes of Uncharted 2, God of war 3, heavy rain and more...). This is Guerrilla Games third installment in the Killzone franchise (Killzone PS2 and Killzone: liberation PSP) but Killzone 2 is their first incarnation utilizing the power of the Playstation3.

Graphics and Presentation

The guys and girls over at Guerrilla Games have obviously spent 'a lot' of time mastering the PS3 development kit. They seem to be the first company to truly push the bar out on current PS3 technology with the exceptions of the equally mighty Uncharted from the folks over at Naughty Dog and the ever elusive Gran Turismo 5 by in house Sony’s Polyphony Digital. The game has a very dark colour pallet for its duration and the graphics are some of the best seen on the system.

From the very first mission it’s immediately evident that Killzone 2 is a keeper and one of those games you’ll be using to show off to mates about the power of your glossy black box. The game has a very dirty and visceral feel, in a good way of course. The first time you fill a Helghast solider full of hot lead, seeing his body jolt back and forth with every shot or witnessing an ISA hover craft swoop down to the battle field in real time, will no doubt have you screaming “Oh my God did you see that”! Particle effects and lighting also play a big part in the overall look and feel of Killzone 2, definitely adding layers to the level of immersion you’ll feel as a player.

Sound

As you would expect with a big budget action title, the sound quality in Killzone 2 is a staggering spectacle to behold and assuming you have the right surround sound set up, you’ll literally be blown away. Hearing constant battle chatter whilst having every explosion triggered and bullet fired, feels as though it impacted within earshot of you and is a tremendously satisfying experience.

Gameplay

Firstly let me start with the words 'this is not Modern warfare'! Killzone 2 is another beast entirely. The first time I picked up my PS3 controller to indulge in a few hours of the zone, I got all fired up and ready to lay waste to the Helghast armies. I flipped the difficulty up to veteran and entered the games campaign mode... What followed next was a 'shameful' succession of horrid deaths, on my part, but not because the game has awful play mechanics. I just kept getting shot and dying repeatedly.

The AI in Killzone 2 is brutal and unforgiving especially when played on the two higher difficulty settings. Seeing the Helghast flank left and right, lobbing grenades or running up and hitting you with a sneaky close quarters gun but as they converge trying to surround your position is both an awesome and terrifying sight. Killzone 2 is a highly methodical affair and requires a totally different approach than your typical run and gunner, for instance a first for the FPS (first person shooter) genre, is the cover system. You can tap L2 next to most objects in the games world to duck down into cover then with a flick of the analogue stick, start popping out to pick off your foes. The option to fire from the hip is always there, just not very wise in most situations.

The single player campaign, although relatively linier, will definitely keep you entertained with tanks/walkers to pilot, emblems to shoot, packages to collect and mission completion times to beat, you’ll be with this one for while. But the meat of Killzone 2 is not found in its single player mode, its online multiplayer is the place you’ll be once the story has run its course and this mode is handled remarkably well. All of your typical options are present deathmatch, search and destroy, create a clan, create squads, its all here. Where Killzone 2 really excels is in the areas were it brings its own ideas to life like the way each of its multi player matches can consist of up to five game types that seamlessly blend from one to another or its robust levelling and badge ability system. When you first start up in the online campaign, you’ll be hard pressed to clock up 2-3 kills a game and most likely contemplate giving in to defeat but don’t give up just yet! With those 2-3 kills come EXP (experience points) and with EXP comes hope and new skills.

Completing specific tasks (i.e. 10 head shots) while playing will also unlock badges, which can be selected to change your class and in turn skills at your disposal. The ranges from the saboteur badge gives you the ability to clone your opponents and infiltrate their ranks as one of their squad or the medic badge gives you the ability to heal fallen comrades. The badges really give the game some extra depth and in later battles, give you the option to pick and choose bits from each class, culminating in your perfect solider.

Completion and Replay ability

Killzone 2 will have you coming back for one more fix time after time. And although the single player mode will be over in around 6-10 hours, the extensive multiplayer mode fills the void quite comfortably. In the end Killzone 2 is a testament to the brilliant minds over at Guerrilla Games, and I give them all the credit due for producing an epic and rewarding game experience that had me hooked from the very beginning. My only reservation for Killzone 2 would be "Next time try exploring all the colours of the rainbow guys"!

Excellent Game

I recently got my hands on Killzone 2 and even though it is a relatively old game, it still outshines games coming out now.

It really is an excellent game and I will break down the positives and negatives of it for you GamesBasement customers who are interested in buying it!

The story is a relatively good story with lots of plots and interesting approaches. The story is on the short side clocking in at around 10 hours for me on Veteren. There are lots of things to collect and destroy including intel and logo things on the side of walls. You can check your SP progress online at killzone.com which is a nice addition. When done with the SP, hop online for another intense experience.

The main selling point of this game has got to be the graphics. Of all console games I have played, this game has got to have the most beautiful and detailed graphics of all. Sometimes I just stop to look at the guns or the brass plaques in Radec academy. It will be difficult to move back to older FPS’s as it will seem like I am playing a PS2 game. Unfortunately I dont have an HDTV but was given the chance to play this game on one… boy!! It looks soo much better which is not surprising! This game could be the reason for me getting a HDTV in the future. If you are a graphics whore, you wont be disappointed.

After loads of hours playing COD4, these controls really confused me. I couldnt understand how Guerrilla would put such horrible controls on a game. This was before I changed the settings to Alternate 2 and then I was happy. Only thing I had to get used to was L2 as cover. After a while I was perfectly suited to the controls and now COD4′s controls confuse me! If you are a COD4 die-hard, change the settings to Alternate 2 and go from there.

The sound in this game is absolutely incredible. Explosions all around you and gunfire from your behind. If you dont have surround sound, you are missing out big time on this audio masterpiece. The sound of Helghast givng and team mates shouting orders at you really gets the adrenaline going. Everything in this game has the perfect audio to go with it.. metal, ground, Helghast etc. This game had the Sound to go with those beautiful graphics and I just cant get enough!

The helghan world is set on a planet with gravity 3 times the strength of that on earth. This causes heavy movement and a realistic jumping action. I was used to COD4′s “arcadey” movement which was light and fast. The heavy movement just didn’t really do it for me and even after all the gametime, im still not fully convinced. Yes I have got used to it but I think everything could’ve worked better if it was a bit lighter. Still this doesn’t ruin the game at all and sometimes I completely forget about it. The cover system is a new addition but Im not sure if it works that well. Cover systems are really meant for a TPS, not so much on a FPS. The cover system is disabled online which I agree with.

Online is where this game really shines, everything just works so perfectly. Dedicated servers do work well and is bearable as the hit detection is perfect. Joining games is easy and so is joining clans. Something brilliant that COD4 didn’t have is the online scoreboards and stats. The stats encourage you to play better online and its great fun comparing K/D ratio’s with your mates! The servers are down quite a bit during the early days but this could only be a good thing. Modes include Bodycount, Search and Retrieve, Assassination, Search and Destroy and Capture and Hold. Killzone 2 has got to have one of the best onlines I have played.

Killzone 2 is a must for anyone whether you are an FPS fan or just a games fan. This game is guaranteed to not disappoint. Possibly the greatest FPS this gen and would make a great addition to any gamers collection.
