LittleBigPlanet (PS3) - Review
“A world that’s innovatively wacky and packed with endless possibilities”
Ever thought about all the fun and quirky things you could do with your PlayStation 3? Well if you have it seems you’re not the only one, as Media Molecule and Sony Computer Entertainment presents a world breaking new ground with enough creative flare and enthusiasm, it literally breathes fresh and inventive ideas into the future of next generation consoles. In welcoming LittleBigPlanet (released date November 5th 2008) into our hearts, it’s hard to believe that our gaming world existed without it. This is a game suitable for any age or creed and much like a piñata is waiting to be cracked wide open.
Graphics and Presentation
LittleBigPlanet is a play on creativity so it’s no surprise that the graphical aspect of things would be just as creative. The detail and colouring are immaculately crisp and simply stunning to watch. From the moment you meet Sackboy, you’re instantly lost for words over the realistic mechanisms applied to his the fabric-coated chums.
This is truly a world far from the norm, that when played with friends will inspire your own creativity to instantaneously leap boundaries. Never before have we seen such a puzzle plat-former capable of creating user-generated content that in turn can be shared within its own community. Its unconventional content is breath-taking to say the least and each level mesmerising, though that may have something more to do with your inability of how best to the describe the game.
On the LittleBigPlanet many of its wonderful characters and their creations have mysteriously gone missing and nobody knows why. With your arrival your told of the strange occurrences and asked that you help unravel this worrying conundrum and catch the sneaky culprit. From here the possibilities are endless as you take on the form of the loveable sack person with whom you were earlier introduced and step into the bubbly and kooky world known as LittleBigPlanet.
Sound
The tranquil sounds found to be flowing out of LittleBigPlanet playlist is so soothing throughout the game, that at times its able to tame one of your more insane hair-pulling or nail biting moments. Its bubbly and airy feel takes you to a place filled with happy thoughts, leaving all your troubles behind and concentrating on nothing more than your sack companion and the adventures ahead.
LittleBigPlanet Gameplay
In starting off the gameplay of LittleBigPlanet your magical journey begins in the POD (space station), where you can visit ‘LittleBigPlanet’, ‘My Moon’ or ‘InfoMoon’. From the menu of LittleBigPlanet you can choose to do story mode, quick play, visit the LBP community or buy from the LittleBigStore. With so much to choose from on this LittleBigPlanet you might find yourself a little confused from time to time, but don’t panic just yet, as that friendly voice in which you hear in the background will gladly guide you through.
In jumping into LBP there’s a great deal keeping you entertained, for instance customising your Sackboy/girl can offer you oodles of fun or the collecting of score bubbles, stickers and decorations that help to build up your score and win rewards. Although the story mode is your average single player pick of the mill, it’s ingenious and a joy to play. After playing through most levels in LBP you’ll have the option to create your own levels of imaginativeness that waits on the arisen of ‘My Moon’. Now what’s great about ‘My Moon’ and this particular style of gameplay is how everything is ordinarily left up to you.
This is momentarily the place where your ingenuity will flourish as you start to build your own new levels from scratch. Select from a number of tools in which you can either decide to be bold and start with a blank canvas or adapt a template readily made, the choice is yours and yours alone. In My Moon anyone and everyone can be creative and more importantly an individual, as no one level will ever look or feel the same. It’s your chance to place your mark on LittleBigPlanet and stamp you must, for it’s the originality of LBP that makes it so addictively prosperous.
What really does it for me with this game is the level of customisation that can be applied, as it’s not just the characters, but rather the whole game, allowing you to recreate and make it your own. This is the type of game that we could only have dreamt about and genuinely never thought would come to pass. There’s really nothing like it, from the level of cuteness to the realistically modelled physics, every aspect of LBP is like a dream world and with it; making all your quirky dreams comes true.
Now if you’re still not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, why not give the online community cool levels a swirl and see if you can’t find yourself something splendid to play with, or even visit the LittleBigStore and see about customarily mix things up a bit. The hours you’ll spend putting into this game really can’t be stressed enough, but genuinely hours well spent I would say, as simply put LittleBigPlanet is a world onto its own, one in which you’ll have a ball accomplishing.
Closing Comments about Little Big Planet
In summing up my review, overall I found LittleBigPlanet all in all the game to be fantastically superb. The graphics are exceptional, the gameplay is outstanding and its online community, a hoot! If you actually decide to buy LittleBigPlanet, I would advise you explore every nook and cranny of this game, leaving no castle, rock, ghost house, or jungle unturned. With all that said this truly is a game that is suitably enjoyed by anyone of any age, but more importantly for you to remember is, have fun!
