Round one... fight!

Capcom has once again made the goose lay a golden egg in the form of Street Fighter 4 (PS3, XBOX and PC).For the uninitiated, Street Fighter 4, for all intents and purposes, is the daddy of all beat’em ups. From its less than spectacular origins in august 1987, the series has come a long way and has grown to be one of the most well known and popular fighting games to date. Hosting a selection of its most classic characters and a few never before seen in any other street fighter game, so prepare yourself for the fight of a life time.

Graphic and Presentation

From the staggering introduction video (best described as a moving water colour painting), newbie’s and veterans alike will immediately know they’re in for something special. The art style and look of the game is a huge departure from previous incarnation of the Street Fighter franchise and let me be the first to say, it 'works' and works extremely well. For those who fork out the extra cash for the special edition of the game, you’ll be privy to a Blu-ray of the new animated Street Fighter movie. Although, even if you didn’t go with the special edition, you’ll still be treated to some animated sequences at the start and end of every characters story mode and while they are not award winning, they do go some way to improving upon the earlier games still image ending.

Traditionally the game has always been a 2D fighter, with 2D characters and backgrounds and although still 2D, in the sense of the combat prospective, the characters and backgrounds are now beautifully modelled in full 3D.

To some this may be a little too much at first, seeing their all time favourite characters reimaged. Considering that the transition to 3D comes with a little extra bulk and some over the top facial animations, it may take a while to get used to. Street Fighter 4 is oozing with charm, the first time you do a dragon punch and see the wing of a plane crash to the ground in the background, will almost certainly put a smile on your face. The brains over at Capcom have certainly done a great job with the overall look of this game and definitely deserve two thumbs up.

Sound

Sound effects and voiceovers are all in place, playing their part to bring this package tightly together. Sound is generally handled well throughout this boastful brawler and the option to stream your own tunes directly off the Playstation3 is great, although the j-pop intro music can start to grate after the hundredth loop.

Game play

Unlike Tekken and Soul Caliber, the Street Fighter series has always chosen to stick to the 2D way of doing things and for the most part its always worked, still offering similar fight modes, score boards and training options to its 3D counter parts in this new iteration. You have basic modes such as arcade, where you unlock your hidden characters by completing the game, verse mode where you battle friends or computer opponents, network battle where you take those long hours of practice online (only to get beaten by a 6 year old Japanese kid), and trail, for those who wish to learn some basic combo strings the veterans have long mastered. There are 16 main fighters such as Ryu, Ken, M.Bison, Sagat and Chung li. When you begin the game, 9 are blanked out as they are unlockable.

For anybody who’s played the last few incarnations of street fighter (i.e. Capcom VS SNK series or Street Fighter third strike), take a small step back and breathe...now relinquish your thoughts of ultra parries and isms. Capcom may have upped the game ten fold graphically but in terms of game mechanic, they’ve kept this one strictly old school, which by no means is a bad thing. This bad boy plays like classic Street Fighter 2! The one for that little grey box called a Super Nintendo, with only a few slight alterations.

You have your basic kicks and punches, light, medium and heavy. Two light attacks and a direction leading to a throw and two medium attacks leading to a focus attack. New to the Street Fighter series, this attack produces a lovely looking ink effect before your character freezes for a split second, then follows through on your strike. This attack can be used quite strategically, due to the fact that its able to absorb any one hit thrown by your opponent and as long as your hit connects, it replenishes your health.

Also, we have our standard fireballs, dragon punches and spinning bird kicks from previous games. These are 'moves'!! This time around you need to press two of the buttons needed to perform the move, instead of one (i.e. two punches instead of one). You transform all your basic moves into EX moves, so a fireball becomes a EX fireball dealing extra damage and additional hits (to pull off these moves you also need to have at least one bar on your ex meter which is filled by attacking). Last but not least are the ultra special moves. These are spectacular moves pulled off by directional inputs and any three kicks or punches, which as long as your revenge meter (your revenge meter goes up as you take damage in a match) is full, sees the camera zoom in on the specified character as they unleash the raging death storm, which is the ultra combo.

Upon finishing a round with this, the screen bursts into shades of orange and red as the commentator bellows "ultra combo finish", always leaving you with a nice warm feeling inside. The passionate flames of victory continue to burn!! There are so many finer details to talk about with this one and I have at least another two pages in me, but the best way to learn is to play and I am sure those that do, will no doubt have hours and hours of fun ahead of them.

Completion and replay ability

Capcom have been producing Street Fighter games for over 20 years and certainly know a thing or two about what works. Street Fighter 4 is a superb addition to the franchise, having all the classic nuances and still having enough new content to keep it fresh and accessible to new school market. With all the trophies, characters and icon to collect you’ll most certainly be here for a long time. Capcom has once again proved why Street Fighter is the daddy of the fighting game genre. Buy it!! Now!!!
