Ghostbusters: The Video Game Review

I aint ‘fraid of no ghost!

Ghostbusters (Xbox360, PS3) has certainly taken its time to get here, from commitment issues from the original cast, to the publisher dropping the title mid development, leaving Atari to hurriedly scoop up and finish the title, its been no walk in the park.

Finally after the long wait though, it is time to strap on your Proton Packs and PKE Meters and start bustin’ some ghosts, as you plough your way through a whole new story (written by the movie(s) original writers), and finally experience how it feels to be a Ghostbuster.

Xbox 360 Graphics and Presentation

If you are a Ghostbuster fan, then you are defiantly going to love what Atari has done ‘to the place’ , because they have painstakingly done as much research as possible to make the Xbox 360 game version look and feel how Ghostbusters should.

Firstly, Atari managed to bag the entire original cast, and I don’t mean just the main characters either, they have everyone from the ‘busters’ secretary, to the annoyingly uptight ‘Peck’.

It’s amazing to see and hear the whole cast back together again after so many years and makes even the most grown men beg for another film.

On the location side of things it’s a mixed bag, whilst locations have been faithfully recreated, and do look like their movie counterparts, there are moments, where either due to time restraints or budget issues, you will come to a corridor which looks like its ripped from the PS2 version, and while I only noticed it once or twice throughout the whole game it was still jarring to walk through a grand ballroom only to exit through a bog standard plain hallway.

On the flipside however there are some stunning locales in the game, from Time Square, to enormous gothic castles built up with huge towers and balustrades’, all wreathed in thick rusty iron chains, which help set the mood really well.

However as a side note, the frame rate can occasionally drop below 30 frames per second when there are a lot of ghosts in a small space and while it is noticeable, it happens very few and far between the beginning and end of the game.

But for every negative problem mentioned there are millions more positive attributes to the game, and its mostly in the finer detail, for example if you take your time to explore the Fire House (your base of operations) you’ll find references to the films everywhere, there’s Slimer bouncing around in his cabinet, photographs of the cast on newspaper clippings, and even the painting of Vigo the Destroyer from Ghostbusters 2, openly plotting his revenge on the world.

It’s nice to see how well the source material translates into a video game with a problem, and it’s a visual treat for Ghostbusters fans and newcomers alike.

Xbox 360 Sound

Randy Edelman’s original soundtrack for the first two movies has made its way into the game in its entirety, so yes you will be singing and humming along to the musical score you all know and love.

The score has its moments of intensity whilst mirroring itself with light-heartedness to suit the mood of the gameplay. It’s a nostalgic trip down memory lane, and (annoyingly) will have you humming the title track when you are out doing your shopping.

As mentioned earlier Atari managed to snag the whole original cast and it really does add that layer of authenticity to the game, all the cast do a great job of reprising their roles, and its warming to hear them chat amongst themselves and to hear Bill Murrays character (Venkman) spout some well written one liners.

Xbox 360 Gameplay

In Ghostbusters you assume the role of the newly recruited rookie, and you have been hired to help the ‘Busters test drive Egons newly developed technology and after some ghosts escape, it down to you to catch them.

To catch ghosts first you must weaken them with your Proton Stream by pressing and holding the RT bumper, however if you hold down for too long the pack will overheat and will need venting which you can do with a quick tap of the RB button.
After weakening the ghost, you must then drag the ghost down into your waiting Ghost Trap. Voila! One caught ghost!

‘Busters plays out in a (Gears of War inspired) over the back view which puts you at the forefront of the action. Also worthy of notes is how the game have dropped any visible in-game HUD, and have instead adopted a dead space-esque approach with health and weapon heat meters being represented by certain parts of the Proton Pack, its an approach that helps keep you immersed in the game world with no pop up HUD appearing.

With weapon upgrades to get, and a ton of hidden artifacts to find this game will defiantly appeal to completionists.

Closing Comments for the Xbox 360

A nostalgic trip down memory lane for some, an action packed orgy of fun for others, and while the game has one or two problems, there is no denying the fact that Ghostbusters is one of, if not the best, movie tie in game available this generation.

With gargantuan bosses and sprawling clever levels this game is a must have for newcomers and fans both.
